Many pretend to lead a surrealistic existence---their idea of a rebelious slap in the face of Being---but, ..?

When the label "Catch 22" falls on any of us, we are always caught in the middle. If we rise above the situation. We become heroes, obviously if we fail. We become heels. Relationships are fragile anyway. A good example of what you speak of is this: You become involved with a person of another race. You get in a argument,and suddenly you blurt out a racial slur. How do you mend that fence ? That is a real "Catch 22". Man is capable of much inhumanity to man!
