Where's a good, cheap vacation spot?

You could go to Branson MO. The motels there are cheap, and the food isn't that expensive either, especially if you go to the local places. The best BBQ place I've ever been to is Danna's. Of course being from KC you may have a different taste in BBQ. Right now is the off season in Branson... they won't be picking up again until probably March sometime. There is tons of shopping there (3 outlet malls) and some free things like the fish hatchery. I don't know what kind of vacation you're looking for or how old everyone in your group is, but we drive from NM to Branson every year for vacation. With money being an issue for you, Branson might be a good choice since it's only about 200 miles from where you live. Good luck finding somewhere fun to go on your vacation!
