You might read Baker v. Carr a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1962. Commonly referred to as the "one man, one vote" case. There were decisions before and after Baker which would help with your debate. This is not directly about the electoral college. My best argument, if I voted, would be that direct voting encourages people who live in one party states such as California, New York, and Utah to vote under the theory that the vote would count in national elections of presidents.
